World Water Day

Ladies and gentlemen, it is World Water Day!

Water is a big problem.

We’ve talked about clean water before, but today is YOUR day and MY day to make a BIG difference!

I want to introduce you to The Adventure Project.

They dream big. And they strive to make an impact in a very practical way. But I’ll let them share in their own words how your donation TODAY can help impact nearly a million people:

Thank you for literally saving lives. To show our gratitude, here is a ridiculous little screensaver-esque video that is perfect for spacing out watching during your lunch break.

This is what happens when I leave for a girls weekend and Mitch is home with a camera, access to the kitchen and WAY to much time.

Enjoy!

Learning to Ride – I Heart Faces Submission

You may have noticed that there haven’t been as many I Heart Faces submissions lately, but they have changed their contest format to be once a month going forward instead of once a week. March’s theme is “beautiful black and white.”

My father-in-law is quite the handyman and restored a little dirt bike that Mitch and his siblings used to ride WAY back in the day. Now there is a whole new generation of kids to enjoy it, but don’t think for a moment that the boys were actually interested in sharing it! As the day drew to a close and we were about to head over to the campfire for dinner and s’mores, it was decided that Stephanie and I had to ride it, too. There was much apprehension, resistance and screaming on both of our parts and, for Stephanie’s sake, I won’t share the picture of her physically being picked up and set on the bike by her husband while I cruelly laugh in the foreground.

Anyway, back to the theme. Black and white just so perfectly removes the chaotic color and narrows they eye down to the important stuff. There have been so many BEAUTIFUL portraits of BEAUTIFUL women and children submitted for the contest and I went through them in awe. It’s so tempting to want to replicate other artists and their magic subject/expression/lighting/whatever. But, while there can be much to learn from it just as painters have replicated great works to learn from them, I also need to be true to my own style.

I want to capture beauty in my own way.

The thrill of living in the moment.

The newness of being outside your comfort zone.

The rush of adrenaline mixed with excitement.

The rev of the engine when you give it some gas.

The tender connection between husband and wife.

The beauty of everyday life so often missed.

Here are some links to some of my favorite entries from other other photographers, in no particular order:

1. 92 Years and 5 Months

2. I Heart Faces Black and White

3. Laughter is Always the Best Medicine

4. What a Ride

A Valentines Day Tea Party!

On Valentines Day, I got to spend the afternoon at a little ladies ‘n gents tea party in the beautiful little town of Duvall, WA. It was so fun to see a dozen kids sporting their fancy pearls and dresses and vests and hats!

For privacy reasons, the photos of the event attendees are in a private gallery, but the hostess did such a beautiful job with the decor and kid-friendly menu that I just had to share some of the details of this cute party along with her kids!

I just wanted to snatch that whole platter of raspberry mini-cupcakes from the kids and run out the door with them! I managed to restrain myself, but you probably won’t judge me so harshly when you scroll through these mouthwatering treats and pretty decorations!

If you were a tea party attendee or parent, the event photos are in the gallery and you may contact Colleen for the gallery password.

Junior’s Great Outdoors

We had such a great time with Jocelyn and wanted to share a few of her big brother and cousin’s pictures, too!

Junior is one boy who is happy as a clam in his element: the great outdoors.

One of the best parts about what we do is getting to capture people in their element. We find that when kids (and adults!) are in a familiar environment and not in a sterile studio setting, we get a glimpse at what really makes them tick and have the opportunity to capture that spark forever.

Junior’s mom had promised him that if he behaved himself during the shoot that he could get some fishing shots. That first picture at the creek after he pulled out his pole and rubber boots makes me smile every time: you can just see his radient grin bursting from ear to ear in excitement!

Be sure to check out the rest of Junior’s photos in the gallery!

Jocelyn is Two!

Sweet little Jocelyn is two years old today and we’re excited her family decided to commemorate it with a session with Netzer Media! She was a little coy at first, but once the balloons came out, so did this little lady’s personality and smile!

We were also excited to be able to go outside and take advantage of the sun for a few minutes too – what a rarity in these rainy parts!

Be sure to check out the rest of the gallery!

Aria’s First Birthday Bash

While it is hard to believe, our little lovely niece is now a ONE YEAR OLD and we celebrated a few weeks ago with a big family birthday party.

She received many fun gifts and, like most kids, was fascinated with the wrapping and boxes more than anything. She even hammed it up once in a while for her paparazzi entourage.

When she decided she was done with presents and attention, she set her sights on grandma and grandpa’s office in search of the mesmerizing “fissssshhhhhh” in their aquarium.

Silly Boys – I Heart Faces Photo Submission

As a part of my efforts to try and capture more of the magical and mundane moments of my world, I’m using the I Heart Faces weekly photo challenge to remind me to get my camera out more.

This week, the the theme is silliness for photographers to showcase the “amazingly funny, goofy, silly people in our lives.” While I’ve taken a few funny shots of my family this week, I probably couldn’t post them without paying dearly for it. So, for now, I’ll hold on to them for future blackmail purposes.

Mitch and my brother-in-laws (yes, I’ll even include you, Lasse!) are by far the silliest people I know. No sugared-up, sleep-deprived child will have a thing on these boys when they get together.

This is their Look-We-Have-Created-Fire Dance (ala Castaway) being performed after successfully lighting a campfire with the assistance of a blowtorch and diesel. Pretty manly.

Pranking the Husband…Or At Least Trying To

I’m pretty confident everyone has one person in their life that is just the hands-down, best prankster.

I have been blessed (cursed?) with two: my college roommate, Molly, and Mitch. I can truly never win against either of these two and the last time I thought I just might have, my electronic toothbrush got doused in half a bottle of hairspray (long story; bottom line is that I don’t recommend being on the receiving end of this prank).

This year for Christmas, Molly got me this coffee mug that is designed to look like a Canon 24-105mm lense. At first glance, it is actually pretty convincing!

Mitch wasn’t there when I received it and my first thought, before even thanking Molly, was: “Wow, maybe I will finally be able to get him!”

I hid the mug and waited for weeks for just the right opportunity.

The Ripley’s Golden Anniversary Celebration

I was honored to spend New Years Eve with Jim and Sherrie as they celebrated fifty years of marriage with an intimate evening with their family at Pellegrino’s. After a delightful dinner interspersed with games, gifts and toasts, the couple renewed their vows with their officiating grandson. I’m not sure if there was a dry eye in the place after hearing such touching and inspiring words exchanged between them.

That said, this is a family who knows how to love and how to laugh. Family jokes, belly laughs and silly faces characterized the night. What a wonderful example of what marriage can be!

8 Things Snow Means in the Pacific Northwest

After spending the better part of the week housebound, I decided to go on a three mile urban hike this morning to see how winter wonderland is looking up close. The ugly melt down is expected to start today and I didn’t want to miss it.

It got me thinking about winter in our region and how I would ever possibly explain it to an outsider. Here goes.

In the Pacific Northwest, snow means:

1. Collective Shock

We are in a unique geographic area in the PNW: we don’t expect or plan for snow like the east coast or midwest but we also aren’t as far out of the grasp of winter as the south and southwest. Our idea of snow is waking up a handful of times during the year to a miniscule dusting of white, foreign stuff that has melted away by the rain by 11:00 am. But every once in awhile, Mother Nature blindsides us with the real deal. We tend to exist in a state of dazed confusion as to what has happened to our little world.

Take this man, for example. Yes, he is wearing his sweats in public. Yes, he is walking down the middle of the street in front of a car. And, yes, he is carrying a cherub-covered umbrella.

2. A Whole Vocabulary of Weather-Related Words Mashed Together

In the spirit of our uniqueness, we don’t have normal snow. It doesn’t just come down, make everything pretty and let us shovel away the parts that are inconvenient. No, we like to live on the edge – the edge between frozen and unfrozen. Our snow tends to come when we are hovering in the 27-34 F range. So it will snow, melt, refreeze, hail, rain, refreeze and then snow again. Since it happens so rarely, we have yet to develop sophisticated words for these different stages of precipitation, so we just mash them together. Hail-snow, for example. I kid you not, snowflake size precipitation was bouncing off of the fresh snow on our porch yesterday.
